Former host of the Ask Gail segment on the Comcast morning show and former Ask Gail Contributing Editor to Success Magazine, Gail Kasper must guide people to develop new habits to attain their goals everyday. Having coached thousands of people, Gail would say, ?I have seen the "want" far exceed the "need" in achieving a goal.?
Think about the following questions:
Do you know someone who has suddenly made it a priority to reduce debt?
Do you know someone who has just realized a health risk and now they are suddenly deciding to quit smoking?
With regard to the above, if you asked yourself ?why? these people are making a change, it?s because they either want to be loved, they want to feel good about themselves, their life is in danger, or the stress of the situation is too unbearable. Typically, we fall into the routine of life and do nothing, until we can?t take it anymore or the scare of losing something causes us to wake up. By making small changes that eventually become new positive habits, we are much more likely to see the long-term life changes we hope and dream for. We have to change our thought process.
With PROGRESS in life sometimes feeling futile, Gail suggests these specific steps to help you achieve goals all year round.
1. Establish the PLAN!
The new year is about us. Make a list of all of your personal and professional goals that you would like to attain, whether they are short term or long-term goals.
2. Determine your RESOURCES
Do you ?know? how to achieve these goals or do you need a coach or mentor? Do you need to attend a class, talk to an association, or learn from someone who is already doing what you?d like to do? What tools do you need to have in place to take steps toward these goals. If it were looking for a job, it might be a computer and a car? Make certain that you take advantage of these resources.
3. What are your OPERATING SKILLS
What are your current talents and strengths? Make a list. These are the operating skills that work for you and will help you in achieving success. These strengths should be posted because regardless of obstacles you will turn to them to keep you moving forward.
4. Balance Your GOALS
Based on your immediate goal, what other complimenting goals must you set. If you have established a career goal, you must also set a health goal and a ?you? goal, something that will enhance you or your image. Or perhaps, you set a career goal, but you need to take a class to see true success in that career, then you might set an educational goal in its place.
5. Take RISKS
Bringing personal contentment to your life means that you must take risks. When you recognize your strengths and are confident in them, you are more likely to take risks. Remember, in life, the only person you ever have to answer to is you. Taking the risk will lead to peace whereas stagnation only leads to frustration.
6. Establish EXTRAORDINARY EXPECTATIONS
With all of my coaching, most people do not want to give it 100% because they fear failure. They feel that if they give it 100% and then fail, they will have wasted their time. Plan extraordinarily, work extraordinarily, give it everything. Regardless of the outcome, you will grow? and get one step closer to peace.
7. SURROUND Yourself With the Right People
Who is in your life that makes you feel good about yourself? Consider a friend, family member, associate or others. If you cannot identify someone who not only makes you feel good about you and challenges you, then you need to reconsider your acquaintenances and find new people.
8. Take STEPS.
Identify specific action steps and take them, despite how you might feel along the way. I guarantee you will have up days and I guarantee you will have down days, but you must keep going. Don?t look for or expect a one-hit wonder. You must recognize that it?s a process.
